I wish I had taken a photo of the owner of our Hoi An homestay on Cam Nam Island—Dat Cam Homestay. I think the name might be a play on “dot com” but I’m not sure. This was our room— very comfortable for $16/night. The owner is a 54 year old widow who works non stop—making breakfast for guests, overseeing employees at the homestay and nearby market and getting around on her huge Harley Davidson motorcycle. She gets up at 5am and goes to sleep at 10pm. One son and daughter work and study in nearby Danang. One son and family help manage the homestay. Her husband, a heavy smoker, died of lung cancer 5 years before, at the age of 49. She was an amazing example of Vietnamese industriousness.
