Our go-to restaurant in Luang Prabang was the Phonheuang Café because it was three blocks from our Sokdee guesthouse and the food was tasty and very inexpensive. One evening I was sitting at the counter when I met Françoise, a Belgian mother of four, who had placed a large take-out order. We talked for about a half hour while we waited for our food. She and her husband were traveling with their four children in Asia for a month on a daily budget of 100 euros, Their sons were 13 and 11 years old and their daughters 7 and 4. I was surprised to hear that the youngest—the four year old girl—was the most flexible of the family. She could sleep anywhere. Françoise and her family have had positive experiences exchanging homes with other families when they travel to help defray some of the trip’s expenses. She was helpful in sharing a couple websites that they have used that facilitate such exchanges.
